I am a mere painstaking borrower and grubworm of a poor devil of a sub-sub librarian...otherwise known as a PhD research student. This blog is a record of my experiences as a postgraduate in English Literature at a UK university, with a research interest in science and culture. When not staring at books, I stare down the viewfinder of my camera as a keen photographer. Often with less pleasure, I also blog on politics and the environment.

Online Text Databases and the Literary Canon

Electronic texts can disguise the categorical markers found in their physical counterparts, eliminating many of the paratextual features which position a work within a particular tradition of authorship and readership and enabling the new reader to approach with fewer preconceptions: with the bland egalitarianism of vanilla plain text, there is no such thing as a popular edition or a prestige hardback.

Johnathan Wolff has a very astute article about the innate dullness of much academic writing in the Education Guardian. In the midst of a PhD crisis at the moment deriving from precisely my feeling that a thesis should be engaging and interesting (perhaps even in the loosest sense "tell a story"), his article hits home. I will say more about how my writing is going when I am less fraught.
